BJP demands Karnataka minister's dismissal over Islam remarks

Just two days after the resignation of a minister over corruption charges, the opposition BJP in Karnataka demanded the removal of another minister from Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar's cabinet.

The BJP demanded the resignation or an apology to the Hindu community from Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy after he described Islam as 'superior' to other religions.

Speaking at a mass wedding organized by the Muslim community in Kuknoor town of Koppal district, Rayareddy described Islam as a great, humane, and science-based religion that guides human conduct.

However, his subsequent remarks triggered an intense political controversy across the state.

He stated that those who lack knowledge about Islam create misconceptions about it. He added that Islam is superior to other religions because it begins with humanity.

Clarifying his statement, Rayareddy noted that although he has not conducted deep research on the Quran nor does he frequently visit temples or monasteries, he studies various religions and history. This interest led him to study Abrahamic religions. He also expressed a desire to visit Mecca for the Hajj pilgrimage, adding that it is not possible as he is a non-Muslim.

Following the minister's remarks, BJP State President R. Ashoka sharply criticized Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. He alleged that the minister's statement insulted Sanatan Hindu religion and temple culture.

Pointing out the Chief Minister's frequent temple visits, the BJP leader wrote on 'X' asking whether there is any end to the Congress government's anti-Hindu attitude. He questioned why Shivakumar remains silent when a cabinet member makes insulting remarks about Hindu religion and monasteries, despite visiting temples with cameras every morning.

BJP spokesperson Ashok Gowda also criticized the state government, alleging that the minister made such comments to appease voters.

Basavaraj Rayareddy previously served as economic adviser to former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and was appointed Higher Education Minister under D. K. Shivakumar in a recent cabinet expansion. Following the recent resignation of B. Nagendra, Rayareddy's comments have placed the ruling Congress government in Karnataka under fresh political pressure.
