Indefinite strike at Meherpur kitchen mkt, daily loss 8 crore

Shopkeepers of the borobazar area of Meherpur in Khulna have started indefinite strike, causing severe panic among buyers and farmers.

Kitchen market owners, grocery traders, fish and meat traders have closed the market for an indefinite period citing excessive rent collection procedure.

Hafizur Rahman, president of the Tahabazar Traders' Association, said, “We have gone from door to door with the district administration and senior officials to resolve the rent complications. They have not given us any solution. Later, no work has been done despite holding a press conference to inform everyone.”

He further complained, “They want to charge rent on every product. They are charging rent at a rate of 10 to 20 times more. For this reason, we are protesting. We demand fair solution.”

He also said that this strike will continue until a solution is found.

Mentionable, this market is a key hub for both the farmers and the buyers. District farmers bring their produce in this market to sell, while traders from different parts of the country gather here to buy those produces.

Due to closure of the market, farmers will face immeasurable consequences. They are unable to sell their vegetables - prompting them to panic and face major loss.

Market leaseholder Sadat Hossain Buro claims that we are not charging a single taka more than the price fixed by the government. Rather, the rent has been reduced by changing it in three phases.

Business leaders say that 7 to 8 crore taka is bought and sold in this market every day.
