India Muslim Law Board dismisses remarks by the Grand Mufti 

New Delhi, Aug 31: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) today dismissed the misinterpretation of Islam by the Grand Mufti of India Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad who created a controversy by saying that women should remain confined to their homes like jewellery in a box as bringing them into the public sphere can cause destruction.

Speaking at a conference in Kochi in south India, the Kerala based Islamic cleric said that women should stay home like jewellery in a box.

Replying to a question about the regressive remarks made by the Islamic cleric, AIMPLB Convenor and Spokesperson, S. Q. R Ilyas said, " People interpret things wrongly.  I don't know why he said this. His remarks are misplaced. Islam does not say that women should not step out or not receive education. It says that women should do what they have to keeping the dress code in mind. In Kerala where Sheikh Abu Bakr comes from, women are ahead of men. The AIMPLB has more than 30 women members who take up issues independently."
