Police have arrested two people, including Demra Thana Chhatra Dal convener Md Masud Rana, as suspects in connection with the shooting at the residence of a BNP leader in Demra, Dhaka.

Based on information provided by the arrestees, police conducted raids in Demra and Rupganj of Narayanganj and recovered three firearms, two magazines and 13 rounds of ammunition.

The other arrested person is Tapas, 38, of the Borobhanga area in Demra. Masud Rana, 35, is a resident of East Boxnagar in Demra and is reportedly the convener of Demra Thana Chhatra Dal.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Wari Division Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami disclosed the information on Tuesday (September 1).

Police said they found evidence of Tapas’s involvement through information technology during the investigation of a case filed with Demra Police Station. He was arrested from the Sultana Kamal Bridge approach area under Demra Police Station at around 2:30am on Monday night.

After interrogating Tapas, police, based on information provided by him, conducted a raid at the house of a man named Jalil near Sharif Melamine in Barabo area of Rupganj, Narayanganj. Police arrested Masud Rana, another accused identified during the investigation.

During the raid, police recovered an old single-barrel shotgun and eight cartridges from a wooden platform inside an abandoned room of the house.

Later, based on information provided by Tapas and Masud Rana, police conducted another raid at Tapas’s rented residence in the Barabo area of Rupganj. Two pistols, two magazines and five rounds of ammunition were recovered from the top of a room’s sunshade.

Police said they are in the process of filing a case under the Arms Act over the recovered firearms and ammunition.

Earlier, on August 28, gunfire was reported at the residence of Md Selim, convener of Demra Thana BNP, in the Sarulia area of Demra in the early hours of the day. According to police, eight people arrived in front of the house on four motorcycles and fired three rounds. The glass of a second-floor window was shattered in the incident.

Police had recovered two pistol bullet casings and a shotgun cartridge from the scene following the shooting.

Police are investigating whether the firearms recovered in the latest raids are linked to those used in the earlier shooting.
