Movement will continue until people’s rights are established, Shafiqur Rahman at long march

The 11-party alliance began a long march from Dhaka to Chattogram, pressing for the implementation of the referendum verdict, trial of the July mass killings, and an end to the crises in electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser, among other demands.
The programme began with an inaugural rally at Shapla Chattar in the capital around 7AM on Saturday. The rally opened with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran.
Speaking at the rally, 11-party alliance chief, Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the long march was being held on behalf of the country’s 180 million people.
He claimed that people were suffering from shortages of gas, electricity and water while still having to pay their bills.
“Our movement will continue until the rights of the 180 million people of this country are established,” he said.
Shafiqur Rahman said they had launched the movement to establish people’s rights and would return home only after achieving that objective.
Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and coordinator of the 11-party alliance, delivered the inaugural speech.
Leaders of the alliance addressed the rally before the long-march convoy left Dhaka for Chattogram at around 8:30AM.
Chief Whip of the Opposition Nahid Islam said the long march represented the people at large. He warned that if the government obstructed the programme, the participants would overcome all obstacles and reach Chattogram.
He also said the six-point demands of the 11-party alliance could eventually turn into a single-point demand.
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Mamunul Haque accused the government of deceiving the nation.
He said the alliance would not hesitate to intensify its movement if the government attempted to lead the country in what he described as the wrong direction.
Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Porwar alleged that the government had failed to reduce people’s sufferings and that the situation was worsening day by day.
He accused the government of deceiving the people by not implementing the referendum verdict and of failing to fulfil its commitments.
“The government must admit its mistakes in parliament and take initiatives to reform the Constitution,” he said.
The alliance’s demands include implementation of the referendum verdict, trial of the July mass killings, resolution of shortages of electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser, curbing the rising prices of essential commodities, an end to extortion and corruption, improvement of the law-and-order situation, and an end to narrow partisan practices.
Several roadside rallies are scheduled to be held at predetermined points along the route. These include the truck stand near Kachpur Bridge in Narayanganj, Paduar Bazar Bishwaroad in Cumilla, Mohipal in Feni and Mirsarai.
The long march is scheduled to conclude with a public rally at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram.
The organisers expect a large turnout of people at different points along the route.
