A gold jewellery trader was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in a lane near his home in Mahadebpur, Naogaon, on Monday night.
The deceased was Alif Chandra Dutta, 50, son of the late Sunil Chandra Dutta of Dulalpara village. He was the owner of Dutta Jewellers at Mahadebpur Bazar.
According to his younger brother Prashanta Chandra, Alif was returning home after closing his shop around 7:30pm when the assailants attacked him from behind with sharp weapons near his home.
The attackers allegedly took six bhori of gold jewellery, Tk 600,000 in cash and the shop's account books before fleeing, he said.
Alif sustained serious injuries and was taken to Mahadebpur Hospital before being shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he died around 11:15pm while undergoing treatment.
Mahadebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Omar Faruk said the identities of those involved and the motive behind the attack were not immediately known.
“Law enforcement agencies are working to identify and arrest those involved in the incident,” he said.
Rajpara Police in Rajshahi has arranged for the autopsy of the body, while legal proceedings are underway, the OC added.
