NATO allies foiled a covert Russian operation in Arctic waters aimed at testing secret technology designed to disable critical subsea communications cables.

A joint maritime operation involving Britain, Norway, and the United States confronted Russian vessels near the Svalbard archipelago, forcing them to abandon the exercise.

The clandestine mission was carried out by Moscow’s Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (GUGI), which used deep-sea submersibles to simulate disabling underwater infrastructure without leaving traces.
Two 1,400 km subsea fiber-optic cables near Svalbard carry critical satellite data for NASA and global connectivity, lying as deep as 2,700 metres below sea level.

Western intelligence officials fear the Kremlin is ramping up sabotage operations across Europe to test NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense pact.

British and Norwegian officials took their findings directly to Moscow to demonstrate awareness of the technology and deter future deployment.

Norway’s Defence Minister Tore Sandvik stated that the joint operation sent a clear message that Russia cannot operate covertly or target critical infrastructure without facing consequences.

The Russian Defence Ministry did not respond to requests for comment, while the Kremlin consistently denies conducting sabotage operations against NATO nations.
