BGB member’s body recovered three days after Meghna riverbank collapse

The body of a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member was recovered from the Meghna River in Bhola on Saturday, three days after he went missing when a section of the riverbank collapsed.

The deceased was identified as Md Amzad, 28, son of Ibrahim of Kalibari Road in Bhola municipality. He was serving with BGB in Roma.

The body was recovered floating in the Meghna at Mizan’s Char in Daulatkhan upazila around 3:15pm, said Sanatan Chandra Sarker, in-charge of the Mirzakalu River Police Outpost in Borhanuddin.

Fishermen and locals spotted the body and informed the river police, who recovered it and brought it ashore. Amzad’s family members later identified the body.

On Wednesday night, Amzad and four friends were sitting on the Meghna riverbank in the Shantirhat area of Shibpur union when a section of the bank, along with geo-bags installed by the Water Development Board, suddenly collapsed into the river.

All five fell into the strong current. Three managed to swim ashore, while Amzad and his friend Rakib went missing.

An extensive search was conducted by the Coast Guard, river police, fire service and local administration, but they could not be found at the time.

Rakib’s body was recovered from the Meghna near Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur on Friday morning.

With the recovery of Amzad’s body on Saturday, the bodies of both missing friends have now been recovered.

The body will be handed over to the family after completion of legal procedures.
