China will hold the rotating presidency of BRICS and host the group's 19th annual summit in 2027.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made the announcement on Saturday (September 12) during the closing session of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Following the announcement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to President Xi for China's upcoming presidency.

Video footage released by India's Ministry of External Affairs captured the moment of exchange between the two leaders.

The Chinese Embassy and the state-run news agency Xinhua confirmed President Xi's announcement. However, details regarding the specific host city and exact dates for the 2027 summit have not yet been disclosed.

India hosted this year's two-day summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, bringing together leaders from 11 member nations alongside representatives from 10 partner countries and international organisations.

In his opening address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted BRICS as an increasingly vital global bloc, urging members to adopt a new and ambitious agenda for the next two decades.

Under India's chairmanship, discussions placed strong emphasis on the Global South, with a focus on practical measures to strengthen food, energy, and supply chain security. Indian officials emphasized that these initiatives would help developing nations navigate economic pressures caused by ongoing global conflicts.
