Importance of U6GHz in AI Era

The global AI market is expected to exceed $631 billion by 2028, with an average annual growth rate of around 27 percent

Strong and reliable network infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as digital technologies continue to advance. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), digital services and cloud-based technologies is placing greater demands on networks. At the same time, the growing volume of data being sent from devices to networks, known as uplink traffic, is increasing the need for additional spectrum capacity.

In this context, mid-band spectrum is gaining greater importance as it offers an effective balance between network coverage and data speeds.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the global AI market is expected to exceed US$631 billion by 2028, with an average annual growth rate of around 27 percent. Software and information services, banking and retail are expected to be among the key drivers of this growth. Together, these three sectors could account for approximately US$222 billion of the global AI market by 2028.

AI-powered services, including intelligent assistants, automated decision-making and generative AI platforms, increasingly rely on cloud-based processing. This is driving a significant increase in data exchanged between devices and the cloud.

Networks are therefore evolving beyond connecting users, becoming the foundation for communication between users and the cloud, machines and the cloud, and AI systems themselves.

Earlier AI and machine learning initiatives focused largely on network automation and data collection. However, the rapid expansion of AI-based services is now creating greater demand for uplink capacity.

What is U6GHz?: U6GHz (6425-7125MHz) could play an important role in meeting the growing network requirements of the AI era. Often referred to as a “golden spectrum,” the band can provide up to 700MHz of bandwidth, offering a strong combination of coverage and data capacity.

U6GHz also has an important role to play in the development of 5G-Advanced. While early 5G deployments placed significant emphasis on high-speed downlink performance, 5G-Advanced is placing greater importance on improving both uplink and downlink capabilities.

The strategic importance of U6GHz can be considered from several perspectives.

First, the growing use of AI applications is changing network traffic patterns and increasing demand for capacity. U6GHz can provide additional spectrum to support high-capacity services while contributing to the commercial development of 5G-Advanced.

Second, U6GHz can strengthen Super Uplink capabilities. In urban areas, AI assistants, cloud computing and industrial automation are driving rapid uplink traffic growth. As connected devices continuously generate and transmit data, uplink is becoming increasingly important to mobile connectivity.

Third, U6GHz could be an important step toward 6G. It is also relevant to discussions around extended mid-band spectrum and FR3 (Frequency Range 3), aimed at supporting real-time cloud intelligence and advanced processing. The UAE’s U6GHz Initiative: In 2026, the United Arab Emirates became the first country to commercially launch a U6GHz network. Following successful trials, the country began expanding the technology for wider commercial use.

The deployment is expected to contribute to the UAE’s ambition of building a “10-Gigabit Intelligent Nation.”

Future Potential: China is also prioritizing faster, more reliable uplink as part of its 5G-Advanced plans. An integrated U6GHz portfolio has been developed to use wider bandwidth efficiently across different network sites and equipment. The technology can support growing demand from high-capacity applications, AI services and industrial networks. 

U6GHz can strengthen multi-band 5G-Advanced networks. The technology is already commercially available, with compatible network equipment and smartphones expected in 2026.
