Dengue patients treated in medicine ward in Jamalpur

Dengue patients in Jamalpur are being treated in the overcrowded medicine ward of the 250-bed General Hospital due to the lack of a dedicated ward, causing severe suffering.

Hospital sources said 257 dengue patients have been admitted so far. Of them, 253 have recovered, while 24 are currently undergoing treatment. Four new patients were admitted and four recovered on Thursday (September 17).

A visit found a noisy and unhygienic environment in the medicine ward. Some dengue patients are sharing beds, while others are staying on dirty floors.

A patient said he had been at the hospital for three days but could not sleep properly because of the poor environment and constant movement of people.

Assistant Director Dr Sohanur Rahman said the hospital usually treats 700-750 patients a day, far beyond its 250-bed capacity. Due to the heavy patient pressure, it was not possible to set up a separate dengue ward, he said.
