Police detained 23 people on suspicion of being members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) during what authorities described as a secret meeting at a mosque in Tejgaon’s Farmgate area on Friday (September 18).

A senior official of Tejgaon Division Police confirmed the detention at around 4:15 PM.

The official said the 23 individuals were detained based on intelligence information. Police initially suspected that they were associated with the banned militant organisation JMB.

According to law enforcement sources, the detainees were allegedly involved with a banned militant group, although their identities and organisational affiliations are still being verified.

Several teams of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit were present at the scene along with local police.

Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division Police Ibne Mizan said 23 people were detained as suspected militants while a secret meeting was allegedly taking place at the mosque.

“They were detained based on intelligence information. Their identities and possible links with militant organisations are being verified,” he said.

Police said further details would be disclosed after the ongoing verification process is completed.
