Woman beaten to death over Facebook post, two arrested

A 60-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death during a clash over a Facebook post related to a land dispute in Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola.

The deceased was identified as Momtaz Begum Rasu, 60.

Police arrested two accused in a murder case filed over the incident and produced them before a Bhola court on Saturday.

The arrested are Md Kashem, 55, the first accused in the case, and his wife Rajia Begum, 50, both residents of Nazir Bepari Bari in Ward 8 of Joynagar Union.

The deceased's daughter Rubina Begum filed the case with Daulatkhan Police Station on Friday night, accusing five people.

According to the case statement and the victim's family, Moinuddin, son of the deceased's brother-in-law Bazlu Bepari, posted something on Facebook on a land-related issue on Thursday.

The post led to an argument and clash at around 8:00 PM between Kashem, his son Iqbal, his wife Rajia Begum and Bazlu.

Rasu Begum reportedly went there to stop the clash when the accused allegedly beat her indiscriminately, leaving her seriously injured.

She reportedly died at around 2:00 AM at her home.

Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Bhola General Hospital for autopsy. Kashem and Rajia were detained for questioning before being shown arrested in the murder case.

Daulatkhan Police Station officer-in-charge Md Fakhrul Islam said the two accused were produced before a court, which ordered that they be sent to jail.

He said police were investigating the case and conducting raids to arrest the remaining accused. The exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received.
