Russia reports attacks on voting systems during parliamentary election

Russian authorities on Saturday reported attacks on online voting systems and communication lines during the country’s three-day parliamentary election.

The online voting system in Moscow came under a major attack overnight, but the situation remained under control, Central Election Commission head Ella Pamfilova said, according to Interfax and state media.

Pamfilova said the attacks were continuing but were being successfully repelled.

Separately, Russia’s digital ministry reported an attempted sabotage of communication lines in the country’s Far East. The attack was thwarted and communications were restored, state media reported.

Russians began voting on Friday in the parliamentary election, which runs through September 20.

President Vladimir Putin had earlier accused Ukraine of attempting to interfere with the election but did not provide evidence.

The election is expected to be presented by the Kremlin as a demonstration of public support for Putin’s policies, including his handling of the war in Ukraine. Most anti-war candidates have been barred from taking part.
