Police find multiple clues in Apratim murder

Police have found multiple clues in the murder of Ishiat Shahriar Apratim, son of Cumilla University teacher Nahida Begum, Cumilla Superintendent of Police Mohammad Anisuzzaman said on Saturday.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday afternoon, the SP said several people suspected of involvement in the murder were being questioned. He said the mystery surrounding the high-profile murder could be solved soon.
“Several police teams have been working since Apratim went missing. We have found several important clues,” Anisuzzaman said.
He said investigators were examining whether the iPhone was the sole motive behind the murder or whether there was another motive. “Whoever is involved in the murder will be brought to justice,” he added.
Sadar South Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rakibul Islam said several people were being questioned in connection with the murder and that some were in police custody.
However, he said their identities could not be disclosed at this stage in the interest of the investigation.
Several sources said a youth named Tuhin might be involved in the murder. He was reportedly with Apratim from the afternoon and is currently in police custody.
Police recovered Apratim’s body from a wooded area south of the South Mor intersection in the Kotbari area of Cumilla on Saturday afternoon. Police said there were signs of serious injury to his head.
The 13-year-old was a Class VII student at Border Guard Public School. He was the only child of Nahida Begum, Associate Professor of the Department of Bangla at Cumilla University, and KM Firoz Shahriar.
Apratim went out with his mother’s iPhone at around 3:30 PM on Friday to take photographs with his friends and did not return home. His father later filed a general diary with Sadar South Police Station after failing to find him.
Police had been reviewing CCTV footage from his last known location and areas around Cumilla University.
Abdul Quader Jilani, the first person to see Apratim’s body, said he and others had gone to the area to cut bamboo. He said they noticed someone lying there and later found that it was Apratim, who had injuries to his head.
Cumilla University Proctor Prof Abdul Hakim said the university had been in contact with police, the Detective Branch and other law enforcement units since the incident.
He said the iPhone that Apratim had been carrying was also not found.
