In just two days- Friday and Saturday, at least seven people were killed and 11 others injured in separate road accidents in Munshiganj, Sirajganj and Barishal. The mishaps involved buses, private cars and trucks.
Four people were killed and one was seriously injured when a passenger bus collided with a private car in Gazaria-Munshiganj, on Saturday afternoon. The accident took place near Jamaldi Bus Stand on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway around 2:38pm.
The deceased were identified as Mujibur Rahman, 55, Shamima Akter, 45, Sabiha Chowdhury, 43 and private car driver Sohel. They were from Gandaria-Dhaka.
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, two rescue units went to the scene after receiving the report. The private car driver died on the spot. Three other passengers were later declared dead at hospital. Another injured passenger was sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
The bus, New Baleshwar, was travelling towards Chattogram. The private car was heading towards Dhaka after the passengers had eaten at Miami Restaurant. Five people, including driver, were in the car.
In another accident, two truck drivers were killed after a bus hit a broken-down truck in Kamarkhand-Sirajganj on Friday late night.
The accident happened near Talukdar Bazar on the Jamuna Bridge West highway. The deceased were Md Aslam, 40, from Tarash Upazila of Sirajganj and Md Apon Islam, 26, from Dinajpur.
Police said the truck had broken down beside the highway. The two drivers were repairing it when a Dhaka-bound bus of Alisha Paribahan hit the truck. Both drivers were seriously injured and later died at Sirajganj Medical College Hospital.
The bus driver and helper fled after the accident. Police seized the bus and are working to identify and arrest them.
