The Aligarh Old Boys’ Association of Bangladesh (AOBA) celebrated Sir Syed Day 2026 in Dhaka on Saturday, marking the 209th birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, founder of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), and honouring his enduring contribution to education and social reform.

The event was held at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden, with AOBA President Osama Taseer presiding. Iqbal Hassan Mahmood, Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, attended the programme as the chief guest, while Independent University Vice-Chancellor Professor M Tamim was the guest of honour.

In the keynote address, AMU alumnus Md Eftakher Sumon highlighted Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s life, educational philosophy and contributions to intellectual advancement and social reform.

Scholarships were distributed among the children of AOBA members and staff as part of the association’s commitment to promoting education and supporting future generations.

The programme began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem, a tribute to departed members, the keynote address and speeches by distinguished guests. The celebration concluded with dinner and a musical evening, bringing together alumni and invited guests.

Through the annual observance, AOBA aims to uphold Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s ideals, strengthen ties among Aligarh alumni in Bangladesh and promote education, integrity, social responsibility and service to humanity.
