2 AL, Jubo League activists arrested over Kamalapur cocktail blasts

Police have arrested two activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League in connection with two cocktail explosions at Platform No. 2 of Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka.

The arrested are Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Raihan, 32, and Mohammad Sanmun, 23.

Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid disclosed the information at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Monday.

Raihan is the organising secretary of the banned Chhatra League’s Shahjahanpur thana unit and works as an electrician with Bangladesh Railway. Police said he has been absent from work for the past three months. Sanmun is an active activist of the Shahjahanpur thana Jubo League, according to police.

Two cocktails exploded between pillars 29 and 30 on Platform No. 2 around 10:37 PM on September 19.

Police said the two were identified through intelligence information, source-based information and technological assistance. During interrogation, both allegedly confessed to their involvement.

Police said several others have also been identified in connection with the incident, but their identities are being withheld for the sake of the investigation.

A case was filed with Dhaka Railway Police Station on September 20 as the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway.
