Rohingya crisis solution must come from Myanmar: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on the international community to take five urgent steps to ensure a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, stressing that the crisis originated in Myanmar and its solution must also come from there.

Speaking at a high-level side event on the Rohingya crisis on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Wednesday (September 23), the Prime Minister called for a clear roadmap for the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas.

Bangladesh and Gambia jointly organised the event, with the European Union and several other partners joining as co-hosts.

“The crisis originated in Myanmar. Its solution also lies in Myanmar,” Tarique Rahman said, noting that Bangladesh has been hosting more than 1.2 million Rohingyas for years while continued violence in Myanmar is forcing more people to flee.

He urged the international community to help create conditions inside Myanmar conducive to repatriation, end violence against Rohingyas and other civilians, and ensure their basic rights and security.

The Prime Minister also called for adequate and predictable humanitarian assistance for both Rohingya refugees and host communities. He noted that despite rising needs, international support has declined, with the humanitarian appeal falling from more than $934 million in 2025 to around $710 million in 2026.

He further stressed the need for justice and accountability, urging continued support for international judicial and investigative mechanisms to hold those responsible for serious crimes accountable.

Tarique Rahman also called for stronger regional and international cooperation to combat cross-border crimes, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, digital fraud and illegal arms trafficking.

“We do not want the Rohingyas to remain displaced forever,” he said, adding that Bangladesh is ready to facilitate their safe and dignified repatriation once the necessary conditions are created.

A day earlier, the Prime Minister told UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih that safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas is essential for a lasting solution to the crisis.
