US sends F-35s to India air exercise with Bangladesh, 8 other countries

The United States has deployed six F-35 fighter jets to India for the multinational ‘Tarang Shakti-26’ air exercise, which also involves Bangladesh and seven other foreign air forces.
The exercise began on September 26 at Air Force Station Jodhpur and adjoining air bases and will continue until October 12, according to the Indian Air Force. Around 40 countries are taking part, with 32 attending as observers.
The US F-35 Lightning II, a fifth-generation fighter aircraft, is participating in a military exercise in India for the first time. Six F-35s and more than 200 US airmen have arrived in India for the exercise.
The participating foreign air forces are from Australia, Bangladesh, France, Germany, Greece, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, along with host India. Bangladesh is participating with a C-130J transport aircraft.
The Indian Air Force is taking part with Rafale, Mirage-2000, Jaguar, Tejas, MiG-29 and Su-30MKI fighter aircraft. France is participating with Rafale aircraft, while the UAE has deployed F-16s.
The exercise is aimed at improving coordination and interoperability among participating air forces. It includes training in air defence, reconnaissance, airlift, air-to-air refuelling and other complex air operations.
The F-35 had previously appeared at the Aero India air show in Bengaluru, but its participation in Tarang Shakti marks the first time the aircraft has taken part in a military exercise on Indian soil.
