The United States has ordered non-essential government employees and their family members to leave Saudi Arabia due to rising security risks, according to a security alert issued by the US mission in the country on Wednesday (October 28).
The move comes amid concerns over Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting airports and critical infrastructure. Washington has also imposed restrictions on the movement of US personnel in the country.
The US mission said the departure order had been in effect since October 23 as security risks to American government employees continued to increase.
The alert noted that Houthi attacks on airports and other critical infrastructure had caused civilian casualties and major disruptions to transportation, raising fears of further escalation in the conflict.
Following recent missile and drone attacks, Washington has also tightened restrictions on US government employees' use of Saudi airports. They must now obtain special permission to travel through any airport in the country.
