President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said an initiative will be taken to introduce a President Agriculture Award to honour farmers for innovations and outstanding contributions to agriculture.
He made the remarks on Sunday when a delegation of the Bangladesh Farmers Association, led by its president Md Siddiqur Rahman Kul Moyez, met him at Bangabhaban.
The president stressed the need for a central national organisation to protect farmers’ interests and urged the government to ensure fair prices for agricultural products through an effective marketing system.
The delegation placed several demands, including interest-free loans, Farmers’ Day and national awards, crop insurance, affordable agricultural inputs and representation on local law-and-order committees.
The president also urged farmers to use modern technology and explore export opportunities for agricultural and processed products.
