Children drown at Jashore pond

Two children, who were related as maternal uncle and nephew, drowned in a pond in Chaugachha upazila of Jashore on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred around evening on September 27 in Dhalipara village of Phulsara Union.

The deceased were Abu Huraira, son of Arif Hossain of the village, and Mahmudul Hasan, son of Asaduzzaman Shanto of Roylapur village in Kashimpur Union of Jashore Sadar.

According to locals and the victims’ relatives, the two children were playing near their homes in the afternoon. At some point, they are believed to have fallen into a pond belonging to a neighbour, Wajed Ali, behind the house, without the knowledge of their family members.

Family members later began searching for them. During the search, locals first spotted Mahmudul Hasan floating in the pond. Shortly after he was rescued, Abu Huraira was also found floating in the water.

Relatives rescued both children and rushed them to the 250-bed Dr Anisuzzaman Hospital in Chaugachha, where doctors declared them dead after examination.

The incident cast a pall of grief over the village, with relatives and neighbours mourning the deaths.

Chaugachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mamunur Rashid confirmed the incident.
