Lionel Messi scored a stunning goal from an improbable angle, but his magical effort could not prevent Inter Miami from falling to a 2-1 defeat against Columbus Crew.

Columbus took the lead in the 28th minute through a penalty kick before Messi brought Inter Miami level five minutes later with a curling free kick from near the right touchline.

The Argentine superstar created further opportunities in the second half but failed to convert, while Columbus sealed victory in the ninth minute of injury time with a goal from Cucho Hernández.

Inter Miami finished the match with 10 players after Santiago Morales received a red card in the closing minutes.

The result marks Inter Miami's ninth defeat in their last 10 matches, sliding the club down to fifth place in the MLS standings with 46 points from 27 games.
