Major project undertaken to address Sylhet flooding

A major project has been undertaken to address flooding and waterlogging in Sylhet, Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said on Wednesday.

He made the remarks while inaugurating riverbank protection work on the right bank of the Surma River at Kanisail under a Bangladesh Water Development Board project.

The minister said riverbank protection work would be carried out in phases at several locations, including Mirer Chowk, Mehendibagh, Kanisail, Toker Bazar and Mirergaon.

He said the Kushiyara and Basia rivers would also be re-excavated, while protection work would be carried out along the Sari and Arsharik rivers.

Muktadir said the larger project includes plans to build around 17 kilometres of embankments and roads along both banks of the Surma. The project is expected to help control flooding, create walking spaces and boost river-based tourism.

He also called for local residents to help monitor the quality and progress of the development work.
