The body of a fisherman who went missing after a coal-carrying lighter vessel hit his boat in the Sundarbans has been recovered.
The body of Mustafa Majhi was recovered from the Pashur River near Indurkola in Mongla around noon on Saturday.
At around 1:00 PM on Friday, an unidentified coal-carrying lighter vessel hit the fishing boat at Chaola Bogir Mukh, between Charaputia and Bhadra rivers in the Chandpai Range of the eastern Sundarbans.
Three fishermen, including Mustafa, fell into the river after the collision. The other two, Shukur Amin and Sunaullah Sani, managed to swim to safety, while Mustafa went missing.
Mustafa was the son of Ojed Majhi of Shayna village in Kawkhali upazila of Pirojpur.
Moktaruzzaman, officer-in-charge of the Chandpai Naval Police Outpost, confirmed that the body had been recovered.
He said legal procedures were under way and the body would be handed over to the family after completion of the formalities. Mustafa’s two sons had arrived in Mongla.
Police have not yet been able to identify the lighter vessel involved in the collision.
