A man was allegedly beaten to death after being lured out of his home on the pretext of having a conversation in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj.

The deceased was identified as Md Babul Akter, 35, a migrant worker and recruiting agent.

Police suspect the killing may have stemmed from a dispute over sending people abroad and the death of a young man who had gone to Russia and was killed in the war there.

Babul was rescued in critical condition from the Kolmogara area of Daipukuria Union on Friday night. He was taken to Chapainawabganj District Hospital, where an on-duty doctor declared him dead.

According to locals, several people from the same area, including Senarul, Bashir and Kotas, called Babul from a shop near his home around 6pm, saying they needed to talk to him.

They allegedly took him to the Kolmogara area, tied his hands and legs and beat him severely before leaving him there.

Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Motiur Rahman said, "Babul had sent a local man to Russia. The man later died while fighting in the war there."

Police are working at the scene and conducting raids to arrest those involved, the officer said, adding that legal proceedings have begun in connection with the incident.
