Bangladesh’s exports to Turkey more than doubled in the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year, rising by 100.11 per cent year-on-year to $210.54 million from $105.21 million a year earlier, according to data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

During the same period, Bangladesh’s overall exports grew by 6.34 per cent to $13.09 billion from $12.31 billion a year earlier.

Readymade garments are Bangladesh’s main export to Turkey. Other exported products include jute and jute goods, footwear, optical products, and various medical and textile industry equipment.

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association Executive President Fazle Shamim Ehsan said Turkey’s rising living standards and incomes were prompting workers to gradually move away from the garment industry, creating a production gap and increasing demand for imported clothing.

He said Bangladesh could expand its presence in the Turkish market by leveraging its production capacity, quality, competitive prices and timely delivery.

Ehsan stressed the need to diversify products and increase value addition, particularly in high-value garments, man-made fibres, technical textiles, jute and jute goods, footwear and other potential products.

He also called for greater participation in international trade fairs, more buyer-seller meetings and stronger public-private coordination.

The two countries have already taken several initiatives to increase trade and investment. In April, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association discussed strengthening strategic partnerships in the textile sector during a meeting with Turkish Ambassador Ramis Sen.

The meeting also discussed potential joint investment in Bangladesh’s man-made fibre and technical textile sectors, imports of raw materials and modern textile machinery from Turkey, and the use of logistics facilities at Turkish Airlines and Istanbul Airport.

Turkey’s organic cotton, modern textile machinery and raw materials could also help Bangladesh’s industries produce higher-value products.

During Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s visit to Bangladesh in June, the two countries announced initiatives to increase bilateral trade from around $1.3 billion to $2 billion.

EPB Vice Chairman Mohammad Hasan Arif said Bangladesh needed to analyse product-specific capabilities and buyer demand to sustain the growth in exports to Turkey.

He also stressed expanding markets for jute, footwear, manufactured goods, and optical, medical and textile industry equipment alongside traditional export products.
