The government has directed deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country to step up monitoring and take legal action to ensure liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is sold at the officially fixed price.

Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said the government had been compelled to adjust LPG prices.

He made the remarks at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

“There have been complaints that fuel is unavailable in some areas,” Zahed said.

“All deputy commissioners have been instructed to increase monitoring and take legal action to ensure normal LPG supplies in the retail market and sales at the prescribed price.”

The Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection conducted 984 drives across the country in September, he said, expressing hope that the LPG shortage would ease.

The adviser said the government was giving priority to railway connectivity and had invited tenders to procure 30 locomotives with financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

He also said the coverage of the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme was being expanded, with beneficiaries set to receive 20kg of rice.

“Life is becoming difficult for poor and vulnerable people,” he said. “To provide them with some relief, the government is expanding the coverage of the cards and increasing the amount of assistance.”

On the Chattogram Port issue, Zahed said the government would make its decision keeping the interests of the state and the people in mind.

“Some decisions may go against an individual, organisation or group,” he said, adding that the government would consult with and reassure all stakeholders before taking a final decision.

He said the government would take decisions based on the interests of the people.

Commenting on the reported attack on journalists at Rajshahi University, Zahed Ur Rahman described the incident as “very unfortunate.”

He said those allegedly involved had initially been expelled from the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

“Beyond that, the government will certainly take action if any criminal offence has been committed,” he said.

Zahed also said the government was highly interested in implementing the Teesta master plan.

“Whether the financing will come from Bangladesh, China or another country is a separate matter for discussion.''
