CJP founder Abhijit Dipke named Ajinkya Shinde to lead the party’s movement after anticipating his arrest amid protests demanding the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner.

In a video message released on social media platform X on Saturday, Dipke said the party should continue its movement even if its senior leaders were detained. He said Shinde would lead the protests and urged supporters to follow him.

“If you are watching this video, it means that I, Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been arrested. In our absence, Ajinkya will lead the protests and the CJP movement. Please follow him,” Dipke said in the recorded message.

After taking charge, Shinde called on supporters to take to the streets. He alleged that the government feared their unity and urged them to gather at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

Delhi Police detained Dipke, CJP members Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka aboard a flight after they arrived in Delhi from Mumbai on Saturday. They were travelling to participate in protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police also detained popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, a vocal critic of the Narendra Modi government, from his home in Gurugram on Saturday morning. Rathee had returned to India from Germany earlier in the week and joined a CJP protest in Bengaluru on October 8.

Police reportedly detained at least 400 protesters during overnight operations across the capital, citing the lack of prior permission for the demonstration. Some protesters were held at Chhatrasal Stadium.

With the party’s senior leaders in police custody, Shinde now faces the challenge of sustaining the movement.

Shinde, who hails from Alibag, a coastal town in Maharashtra, has been a close associate of Dipke for years. He previously served as the social media coordinator for the Aam Aadmi Party’s Maharashtra unit.

The two first met in Goa in 2016. Shinde later left his corporate job to work full-time for the AAP. He initially committed a year to the party’s work in Goa, where the party failed to win any seats in the assembly election. He remained committed to the party and subsequently began working with its Maharashtra unit.
