North Korea launched several missiles on Monday (October 12), with at least one travelling more than 900 kilometres amid rising tensions over weapons tests on the Korean peninsula.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed the launch and said the missiles were launched from Pyongyang on October 12. It did not specify the total number detected, Al Jazeera reported.

Japan’s Coast Guard said North Korea had launched two unidentified objects believed to be ballistic missiles. They were thought to have fallen into the sea.

South Korea’s presidential office said Pyongyang’s repeated missile launches clearly violated United Nations Security Council resolutions and urged North Korea to stop such activities immediately.

JCS spokesperson Jeong Do-young said the latest launches may have been an attempt by North Korea to demonstrate its military capabilities in response to South Korea’s recent test of a hypersonic missile.

On Thursday (October 8), South Korean President Lee Jae-myung observed a test of the country’s first hypersonic missile. It is rare for a South Korean president to attend a public weapons test of this kind.

Lee’s office said the weapon, once fully developed, would significantly enhance South Korea’s ability to launch surprise strikes against strategic targets on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea also tested a hypersonic intermediate-range missile on October 3. Pyongyang claimed the missile could evade the missile defence systems of South Korea and Japan.

Tensions have also risen following a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas last week, which injured three South Korean soldiers.

Seoul formally protested the incident and demanded an apology. A joint investigation by South Korea and the United Nations found that North Korean forces had planted the two landmines about a year earlier.

Pyongyang rejected the accusation and instead accused South Korea of provocative behaviour.
