Production workers of AMC Knit Composite Limited blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Memberbari in Gazipur Sadar Upazila on Monday (October 12) morning, protesting a lay-off notice issued by the factory management.
Demonstrating workers occupied the Mymensingh-bound lane at around 10:20 AM, disrupting vehicular traffic for nearly 20 minutes. Normal traffic movement resumed after highway police intervened and persuaded the protesters to vacate the highway.
According to police and eyewitnesses, workers began gathering outside the factory premises at around 8:00 AM. Tensions flared when local residents and junk business operators (jhut traders) reportedly barred the workers from gathering near the main entrance. Protesting the blockade, the workers moved onto the highway, demanding the immediate reopening of the facility.
Factory sources confirmed that management declared a lay-off for approximately 585 workers across the garments and cutting divisions (Unit-2) starting October 10, citing a lack of work orders and technical issues with the factory's boiler.
Workers alleged that management initially declared a two-day holiday before unexpectedly posting a lay-off notice on Saturday (October 10) without discussing pending dues, compensation, or job security. Fearing job losses and financial distress, the workers called on authorities to restore operations immediately.
Salna Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sahabur Rahman stated that police responded quickly to clear the road, ensuring the brief blockade did not cause prolonged gridlock or severe public inconvenience.
