Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have discussed expanding employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers, particularly taxi and truck drivers, alongside efforts to strengthen bilateral trade, investment and energy cooperation.
The issues were discussed at a courtesy meeting between Mahdi Amin, adviser to the prime minister and spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, and UAE Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdullah Ali Al Humoudi at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the longstanding ties between Bangladesh and the UAE, highlighting their historical diplomatic relations and shared bonds of Muslim brotherhood.
They also recalled the role of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in strengthening the bilateral relationship.
The meeting reviewed progress in follow-up discussions after a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to the information provided.
Both sides emphasised the need to elevate diplomatic ties, expand people-to-people exchanges and create more employment opportunities for Bangladeshi nationals in the UAE.
Particular attention was given to potential recruitment opportunities for Bangladeshi taxi and truck drivers, as well as the possibility of sending more skilled workers to the Gulf country.
The discussions also covered ways to increase bilateral trade, expand UAE investment in Bangladesh, strengthen cooperation in the energy sector and develop new partnerships in strategic infrastructure and industry.
Both sides expressed their commitment to making greater use of these opportunities to deepen economic cooperation and accelerate the growth of the bilateral partnership.
