The same gang was involved in gold ornament thefts at three temples in Dhaka and Narayanganj, police said on Tuesday, announcing the arrest of four people, including a couple, in connection with the incidents.
The information was disclosed at a briefing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Tuesday afternoon.
DMP Joint Commissioner Faruk Hossain said there had been no reports of violence surrounding the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations and that security measures had been taken to ensure peaceful festivities.
Regarding the recent thefts, he said six annas of gold were stolen from Ramna Kali Temple on October 7. Following a complaint lodged with Shahbagh Police Station, police launched an investigation and arrested a couple, Lipi Karmakar and Arnab Roy, from Uttarkhan.
Based on information provided by the couple, police later arrested another person, a jewellery shop owner, and recovered two annas of gold.
During interrogation, police found that the suspects were also linked to recent thefts at Siddheshwari Kali Temple in Dhaka and Baba Loknath Temple in Narayanganj.
According to the DMP official, all four arrestees have confessed to their involvement in the thefts.
Police are investigating whether the suspects were involved in any other theft incidents, he added.
