At least three journalists were allegedly harassed while covering a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Kushtia in the presence of State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shah Alam.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at the cemetery near the home of Abrar Fahad in Kumarkhali, Kushtia, where the state minister had visited to pay tribute to the slain BUET student and offer prayers at his grave.
After the prayers, as the minister was leaving, an altercation broke out between activists of two local BNP factions. The confrontation eventually escalated into a chase and counter-chase and physical scuffles.
According to journalists who witnessed the incident, several agitated party activists confronted them when they attempted to record the clash on their mobile phones and cameras. They also alleged that the activists tried to delete the recorded footage.
When the journalists resisted, at least three of them, including Star News correspondent Johurul Islam, were allegedly physically and verbally harassed.
The incident sparked anger and discontent among local journalists. Journalist leaders condemned the obstruction of professional duties and the harassment of journalists, demanding that those involved be identified and given exemplary punishment.
Local administration officials said the incident was being examined. They added that legal action would be taken following an investigation if a written complaint was filed.
