Pope Leo XIV has undergone successful surgery to remove a cancerous portion of his right lung at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, according to a Vatican statement.
The Vatican said the operation was completed without complications and the pope woke up normally afterwards. Doctors removed the lower part of his right lung to treat the cancer, which had been suspected in earlier examinations.
Further tests are being conducted to determine whether the cancer has spread to other parts of his body, a Vatican source said.
The 71-year-old pontiff will need several days of rest in his hospital room, with all his scheduled meetings cancelled until October 20. His planned lengthy tour of Latin America next month is also uncertain following the surgery.
Pope Leo, who became head of the Catholic Church on May 8 last year, was hospitalised for the first time since assuming the papacy. He had announced on Sunday that doctors had detected a tumour at a very early stage.
