2 maunds of Hilsa seized, 4 penalised

A mobile court in Kamalnagar of Lakshmipur, sentenced two fishermen to jail and fined two transporters for carrying hilsa in violation of a government ban.
During the drive, 2 maunds (80 kilogrammes) of hilsa were seized.
The sentences were handed down by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Muhammad Arafat Hossain during a mobile court operation around 11:00 AM on Friday.
The two fishermen sentenced to jail were Farhad Hossain, 23, son of Abul Bashar, and Md Ismail Hossain, 23, son of Abul Kalam. Both are residents of Char Falcon village in the upazila. The court sentenced each of them to 13 days of simple imprisonment.
Besides, Md Noman and Md Bacchu, also from the same village, were fined Tk 1,000 each for transporting hilsa in violation of the ban.
The upazila fisheries office said, "the upazila fisheries department and the Bangladesh Coast Guard conducted a joint operation in the Meghna River and coastal areas early Friday as part of regular monitoring to protect mother hilsa."
During the operation, four people were detained along with 2 maunds of hilsa from the Ludhua fish landing station area in Char Falcon Union. The seized fish were later distributed among three local orphanages and underprivileged people.
Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Turya Saha said, "all forms of fishing, transportation, buying and selling, marketing, storage and distribution of fish in the Meghna River had been prohibited for 22 days, from October 8 to October 29, to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season."
He added that such drives would continue to protect hilsa, a national resource.
