The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is being observed across the world today, October 17, with a renewed emphasis on safe and adequate housing as a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for a life of dignity.

The 2026 observance, under the theme “Safe Homes for All”, forms part of the broader 2026"2028 theme, “United for Peace and Human Rights”, highlighting the need to place housing security, affordability and accessibility at the centre of poverty eradication policies.

The United Nations-initiated observance seeks to draw attention to the structural causes of poverty, hunger and inequality, while urging governments to ensure equal opportunities and uphold the dignity and fundamental rights of all people through sustainable development.

The day traces its origins to October 17, 1987, when more than 100,000 people gathered at the Trocadéro Plaza in Paris, France, to pay tribute to those living in extreme poverty and suffering from hunger. The gathering declared poverty a violation of human rights, underscoring the principle that poverty is not merely an economic condition but also a question of human dignity and justice.

On December 22, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly formally designated October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty through Resolution 47/196. The observance has been marked annually since 1993.

This year's focus comes amid the continuing global housing crisis, with more than 2.8 billion people worldwide facing some form of inadequate housing. Those already experiencing poverty and social exclusion bear a disproportionate share of the burden, as unsafe, unaffordable, overcrowded or insecure accommodation deepens existing inequalities and restricts access to essential services.
