Dhaka-6 MP and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishrak Hossain has detained six people suspected of involvement in drug dealing during a raid at a slum near a railway line in Gandaria, Dhaka, and handed them over to police.
The raid was conducted on Saturday (October 17) in the railway-side area of Ward 45 under Gandaria Police Station. The state minister shared two videos of the operation on his official Facebook page.
The videos show the suspected drug dealers being handed over to police after an alleged drug den was demolished. In another video, several people can be seen being taken away in handcuffs. However, details about why the state minister was carrying a firearm during the operation or whether it was used remain unclear.
According to a message sent by Ishrak's media cell, the state minister has vowed to continue anti-drug drives until Dhaka-6 is free of drugs.
He said drug dealers would not be spared regardless of their political affiliations. If anyone from his own party is found involved in drug dealing, they will face even harsher punishment, he added.
Addressing locals during the operation, Ishrak said there was no place for drug dealers in his constituency. He added that the authorities had been collecting intelligence for the past six months to identify those involved in the trade.
He also urged residents to provide information about people who supply drugs from outside the area, promising to value those who help apprehend them.
Ishrak said drug abuse was destroying the country's young generation and announced that anti-drug operations had begun in his constituency and would be extended across Bangladesh.
When the detained individuals pleaded to be released, he assured them that no one would physically harm them. They would be taken to the police station and dealt with according to the law, he said, adding that their punishment would be determined through the judicial process.
Gandaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman Monir said the state minister had informed the police after detaining the six individuals. Police personnel later went to the scene and brought them to the station.
A white powder-like substance was recovered from the detainees. Police will confirm through testing whether it was heroin, the OC added.
