The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed separate cases against former Lakshmipur-2 MP Nur Uddin Chowdhury Nayan and his wife, Rubina Yasmin Lubna, over alleged acquisition of assets beyond their known sources of income.

According to the ACC, Nayan holds assets worth Tk 79.99 lakh inconsistent with his known sources of income, while his wife’s assets and expenditure total Tk 1.82 crore without corresponding acceptable sources of income.

Kamrul Islam, assistant director of the ACC’s integrated district office in Chandpur, filed the cases on Sunday afternoon.

The ACC’s investigation found that Nayan owns immovable assets worth Tk 33.14 lakh and movable assets worth Tk 1.24 crore, totalling Tk 1.58 crore. His family and other expenses amounted to Tk 1.15 crore, bringing his total assets and expenditure to Tk 2.73 crore.

Against this, his declared and otherwise acceptable income, including liabilities and loans, amounted to Tk 1.93 crore, leaving a discrepancy of Tk 79.99 lakh, according to the commission.

The ACC alleged that Nayan acquired and possessed the assets through abuse of power, irregularities and corruption while serving as an MP. He has been charged under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.

The commission also found discrepancies in his wife’s asset declarations. Lubna owns immovable assets worth Tk 1.37 crore and movable assets worth Tk 24.66 lakh, totalling Tk 1.62 crore. Her family and other expenses amounted to Tk 20.04 lakh, bringing the combined total to Tk 1.82 crore.

According to the ACC, it found no acceptable source of income to support the assets and expenditure. The commission alleged that the assets were acquired using money obtained through her husband’s alleged irregularities and corruption, and that she held and enjoyed the assets on his behalf.

She has been charged under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 109 of the Penal Code, 1860.

The ACC formed an inquiry team on November 4, 2024, to investigate allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income against Nayan. The separate cases were filed following the inquiry.

Nayan is a former MP for Lakshmipur-2, which comprises Raipur upazila and part of Lakshmipur Sadar. He was the general secretary of the Lakshmipur district unit of the Awami League and is a lawyer at the Lakshmipur Judge Court.

The allegations against Nayan and his wife have yet to be proven in court.
