Citizen identity must take precedence: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that citizenship, rather than religious identity, must be the primary identity in the struggle to build the country. He called on people to remain united in the coming days, as they did during the Liberation War, the restoration of democracy and the 2024 mass uprising.

He made the remarks while exchanging greetings with members of the Hindu community during visits to Durga Puja mandaps in Mohakhali and Gulshan-Banani in the capital on Sunday night (October 18).

The prime minister said people from all religions and communities had fought shoulder to shoulder during the 1971 Liberation War, the struggle to restore democracy and the mass uprising.

Tarique Rahman said every citizen of the country has equal rights. People from all religious backgrounds and professions must work together to establish those rights and build the country, he added.

He also expressed hope that people of all religions would continue to live together peacefully for the next thousand years.

On Sunday night, the prime minister visited the Durga Puja mandap at Mohakhali Raksha Kali Temple, where he exchanged greetings with members of the Puja Udjapan Committee and members of the Hindu community.

He later visited a Puja mandap in Banani and exchanged greetings with worshippers and visitors present there.
