Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the 'July Monument' at the historic Osmani Udyan in the capital, joined by family members of martyrs from the July mass uprising.

Alongside the monument, the Prime Minister also officially opened the modernized Osmani Udyan.

The Prime Minister arrived at the venue at 10:00 AM on Monday (October 19). He unveiled the July Monument accompanied by Md Mokbul Hossain, father of martyr Abu Sayed; Mostafizur Rahman, father of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho; Sanjida Khan Dipti, mother of Shahriar Khan Anas; and Mohammad Shafiul Alam, father of Wasim Akram.

Following the inauguration, the Prime Minister planted a sapling on the monument premises. He subsequently inaugurated the modernized Osmani Udyan, toured the grounds, and inspected the newly established library within the park.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Abdul Moyeen Khan, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, and Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton were present on the occasion.

The twin projects were implemented to preserve the memory of the martyrs of the July mass uprising and to improve the capital's civic environment.

July Monument Inscribed with Names of 834 Martyrs

The 90-foot-tall July Monument was constructed to preserve the memory of the martyrs of the July 2024 mass uprising. Built across approximately one acre of land, the monument features the names of 834 martyrs laser-cut onto its surface, fronted by 20 symbolic memorial plaques.

The exterior of the monument features a 163-foot-long and 4.5-foot-high relief sculpture, while the interior showcases a 171-foot-long and 7.5-foot-high relief sculpture.

The artwork depicts the continuous historical struggles and movements of Bangladesh, including the 1952 Language Movement, the 1969 Mass Uprising, the 1971 Liberation War, the 1990 Mass Movement, and the July 2024 Mass Uprising.

Modernization of Osmani Udyan

Spanning 23 acres at the junction of Old and New Dhaka, the historic Osmani Udyan underwent comprehensive modernization to transform it into a green, safe, and modern civic recreation center.

As part of the upgrades, the legacy water body was renovated alongside the construction of five new water bodies. Existing trees were preserved while new saplings were planted and green islands established.

The park now features approximately 3.1 kilometers of walking paths, a gymnasium, a pagoda, public restrooms, parking facilities, and lakefront ghats. Furthermore, a rainwater harvesting system with a capacity of 50,000 liters has been installed. Arranged in two tiers, the park includes rapid transit pathways elevated two meters above the road level.
