French President Emmanuel Macron expressed deep outrage over the widespread rioting and looting that erupted during ongoing nationwide protests against rising living costs and deteriorating conditions in schools.
In a televised address to the nation on Sunday (October 18), Macron acknowledged the public's grievances regarding the current economic situation while taking a firm stance against violent elements.
Echoing other government officials, the French president primarily held far-left extremists responsible for the violence, accusing them of attacking police personnel and public infrastructure to sow chaos.
"Those who have carried out looting must bear the cost of the damage, and those who sought to destroy the Republic will be held accountable," Macron warned during his address.
He strongly condemned the "unbridled violence" executed by radical far-left groups and numerous criminals who joined the unrest.
Earlier, Macron convened an emergency meeting with senior cabinet officials following a wave of arson attacks and assaults on town halls by masked groups in several cities. He instructed local administrative officials to collaborate closely with municipal mayors in the coming weeks to safeguard public buildings and commercial establishments, suggesting the prohibition of demonstrations where necessary.
In the central French city of Limoges, a fire set at a 19th-century town hall caused its roof to collapse, leaving the historic structure largely destroyed.
Authorities have arrested 2,400 individuals across France in connection with the looting and violent unrest.
