Saudi air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels targeting the capital city of Riyadh, the Saudi-led coalition announced on Friday (October 23).
Spokesperson for the coalition, Turki al-Malki, confirmed the interception in an official statement.
Prior to the interception, Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense Authority issued emergency alerts to residents in Riyadh warning of potential incoming threats. The emergency notifications were broadcasted through the kingdom's National Early Warning Platform.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, authorities urged residents to adhere strictly to safety guidelines and instructions provided by civil defense personnel.
Emergency alerts were also temporarily activated in the southern province of Najran. However, the warnings were rescinded within minutes as the immediate threat subsided.
Civil defense officials instructed the public to follow safety protocols and refrain from gathering at or filming any debris sites.
Similar emergency sirens and alerts were briefly activated in the southern city of Abha and the nearby town of Khamis Mushait before being lifted after conditions normalized, according to the Civil Defense Authority.
