Twelve earthquakes struck off Italy’s coast on Friday (October 23), triggering an orange tsunami alert and prompting precautionary evacuations of schools in Palermo and Messina, according to Italian media reports.
The strongest tremor was initially reported at magnitude 5.0 in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, northwest of the Aeolian Islands. Authorities activated emergency procedures and urged people in exposed coastal areas to follow civil protection instructions.
Schools and public buildings were evacuated as a precaution. No damage had been reported by Sicilian regional authorities at the time of publication.
