LAXMIPUR, Oct 24: Minister for Water Resources Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, MP, has said law-enforcement agencies must be used in the service of the country and its people, not for personal interests.

“For 17 years, the Police Department was run in a particular way. Now, as an elected government, how we run it for the people will depend on our mindset. No one must use law-enforcement agencies for personal purposes. They must be used for the country and its people,” he said.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the oath-taking ceremony of the Laxmipur District Committee of the Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) at the Laxmipur Town Hall auditorium on Friday evening.

The minister said accountability was a major responsibility of an elected government.

“The previous government had no accountability. It did whatever it wanted, whenever it wanted. This did not benefit gold traders, other businesses or ordinary people,” he said.

He added that people had to take to the streets to establish their voting rights, stressing that a stronger democratic foundation would help businesses and entrepreneurs secure a stronger position.

“Patriotism cannot be the government's responsibility alone. We must all be patriotic and responsible,” Anee said.
He said gold traders could contribute to strengthening the country's economy and creating employment opportunities through their businesses.

Maintaining law and order must also be a priority to create such opportunities, he said, adding that every business depended on a stable law and order situation.

“We must remain vigilant to ensure that law and order remains normal,” he said.

BAJUS Central Committee President Enamul Haque Khan chaired the event, while Laxmipur District BAJUS Chairman Samir Karmakar moderated it.

Among others, BAJUS Vice-President for the Standing Committee on District Monitoring Azad Ahmed, BAJUS Institute Chairman Anwar Hossain, former BAJUS Central Committee general secretary Dr Dewan Aminul Islam Shaheen, BAJUS Election Board Chairman Mizanur Rahman Manik, district Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council President Shankar Majumder, district Puja Udjapan Parishad President Swapan Chandra Nath and its General Secretary Shimul Saha attended the programme.
