Separate courts in Lalmonirhat, Sirajganj and Joypurhat districts sentenced three persons to life-term imprisonment in rape, drug and murder cases, in two days.

LALMONIRHAT: Nityananda Sarkar, judge of the Lalmonirhat Child Repression Prevention Tribunal, sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment on Tuesday for the 2018 rape of a five-year-old girl.

The judge also fined the convicted, Alamgir Hossain, Tk 1 lakh, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment if he fails to pay.

According to court documents, the victim returned home bleeding and crying on July 18, 2018, in the Dakkhin Shiberkuti area of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, and told her mother that Hossain had assaulted her.

The child was admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital in critical condition. Her father filed a case with the local police station.

Following a lengthy trial and testimonies from 11 witnesses, the court declared the verdict.

SIRAJGANJ: A court in Sirajganj sentenced bus driver Ramjan Ali, 55, to life imprisonment on Tuesday for possessing 108 bottles of Indian Phensedyl syrup and one litre of liquid Phensedyl.

Judge Nazrul Islam of the Additional Sessions Judge-3 Court also fined Ali Tk 20,000, with six months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

Police arrested Ramjan Ali and bus supervisor Rifat-ul Islam alias Rifat on August 2, 2012, after searching a passenger bus at a checkpoint near the western roundabout of the Jamuna Bridge following a tip-off that Phensedyl was being transported from Dinajpur to Dhaka for sale.

After hearing evidence, the court sentenced Ali and acquitted the supervisor, Additional Public Prosecutor Latif Akand said.

JOYPURHAT: Judge Md Tasruzzaman of the Joypurhat Additional Sessions Judge’s Second Court sentenced a man to life in prison on Monday for the murder of Dilip Kumar Majhi in Panchbibi Upazila 23 years ago.

He also fined Mozam Tk 5,000, with an additional year in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

Mozam, the son of late Soleman and a resident of Kusumba Village in Panchbibi, was tried in absentia.

According to the case records, Mozam had repeatedly made improper advances toward Majhi’s wife. When Majhi and his family protested, Mozam became angry and assaulted him.

On the night of May 20, 2003, Majhi left his house to respond to the call of nature when Mozam and an accomplice entered the home and held his wife at gunpoint.

When Majhi returned, the two strangled him and hung his body from a bamboo beam inside the house to make the death appear to be a suicide.

Police recovered the body the following morning. Former sub-inspector of Panchbibi Police Station Jahangir Alam Pasha filed a murder case the next day.`
