US President Donald Trump has said the United States could launch fresh strikes on Iran on Sunday, October 25, unless Tehran agrees to a “big deal” with Washington.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Trump said the US was considering military action, adding that strikes could begin the following day.
Concerns have been growing in recent days that the United States could launch attacks on Iran at any time.
Trump said Iran could avoid further strikes if it agreed to a deal on Washington’s terms.
“The Iranians want a deal. But the problem is, can they be committed to sticking to it?” he said.
Trump claimed that his objective was to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
In June last year, the United States used B-2 bombers to strike Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Trump argued that last year’s attacks might not have been sufficient to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons if he had not considered launching further strikes this year.
The US president also claimed that oil was flowing through the Strait of Hormuz at pre-war levels, but provided no evidence to support the assertion.
Trump warned that Iran would be forced to reach an agreement through military means if it refused to negotiate.
“I may have to finish the job. Or maybe they’ll make a deal. But I’m not sure. Either way, through military action or a deal, we will win,” he said.
