Farmers block highway over fertiliser shortage

Farmers blocked the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway on Tuesday morning, protesting a fertiliser shortage and alleged black-market sales in Hatibandha upazila.

The blockade took place near Parulia Bazar in Patikapara union, bringing traffic on the highway to a complete halt for about an hour. The protesters withdrew after receiving assurances from the upazila administration.

The farmers alleged that two local individuals, identified as Jadu Member and Bhuttu, had taken control of fertiliser distribution in the union and formed a syndicate, as the designated fertiliser dealer lives in Bogura.

According to the protesters, fertiliser was being distributed at night to favoured individuals in quantities of 10 to 12 sacks, while ordinary farmers were repeatedly visiting distribution points without receiving any supplies.

They said the severe shortage had left them with no option but to block the highway.

Hatibandha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Dip Jan Mitra visited the spot and spoke with the agitating farmers, helping bring the situation under control.

The UNO urged the farmers to remain patient, saying sufficient fertiliser was available.

Hatibandha Upazila Agriculture Officer Harun-or-Rashid also said fertiliser stocks were adequate, but the distribution process was taking some time to complete.

The allegations of irregularities in fertiliser distribution could not be independently verified.
