CHATTOGRAM, Oct 27: The classes of the Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) resume today, Wednesday, after remaining shut down for 36 days by the students, staffers and the teachers of the institute.

The Students, teachers, officers and staffers decided to return to academic work to protect students’ education, following talks with department heads and deans.

Despite returning to classes, students and teachers will continue their campaign demanding the reinstatement of former Vice-Chancellor Prof Abu Sadat Md Sayem while maintaining non-cooperation with the new VC.

Meanwhile, a six-member advisory committee formed by the University Grants Commission (UGC), led by Professor Abdullah-Al-Mamun, will visit the CUET campus on Wednesday morning to hold talks with stakeholders and help resolve the crisis.

According to a notification issued by the UGC’s Public University Management Division, the committee will hold interactive sessions with teachers, students, officers and staff to gather their feedback and proposals.

Formed on October 19 following a Ministry of Education letter, the committee based on its findings, will formulate essential recommendations to restore a normal educational environment, resume classes and improve institutional operations.

Meanwhile, the peaceful movement persists with the primary demands being the reinstatement of the former VC, Prof. Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem, and the removal of the newly appointed VC.

The students said the prolonged suspension of academic activities had put their education and future at risk, but returning to classes would not mean withdrawing from the movement.

On September 21, the Ministry of Education removed Prof Abu Sayed Muhammad Sayem from the post of CUET vice-chancellor and appointed Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) as his replacement.

Protesting the decision, students launched a complete shutdown on September 22. Teachers, officers and employees also began work abstention and non-cooperation programmes demanding Sayem’s reinstatement.
